Welcome to the Copper Rail Depot and Cicely, Alaska P 1

Me--Ron--at the CRD bar in 2002: I am the originator of the Cicely model-building project

I am sure you all fondly remember the early 1990s television series "Northern Exposure" (known as "NX" by those of us who are dedicated fans of this wonderful program).

A few years ago I was finally convinced that I should create a model of the fiction town of Cicely from the NX series. I had already established the historic model towns of Chitina, McCarthy and Kennecott--replicas of significant parts of historic towns that all existed along the long-abandoned Copper River & Northwestern (CRNW) Railway.

You can see images of this model elsewhere on this site. The problem is that few people know much about Alaska and it is the rare person who has ever heard of the CRNW Railway or Kennecott. But the NX TV series had widespread distribution since it first began airing in July of 1990, completing its run six years later in July of 1996.

Although this series was not filmed in Alaska, many viewers related to the town of Cicely and its eclectic, highly-memorable residents. The series was actually filmed in Roslyn, Washington, with interior shots mostly filmed in a studio in Redmond.

Although the NX sets for that Redmond studio are undoubtedly long gone, Roslyn is alive and well and well worth the visit. So, as a part of my model construction visit, I visited that site.

Thus the models that will be constructed for this new project will closely resemble a real town that was a filming site for a major television series that even now remains dear to millions of NX fans.
