The Kennecott Mines
The following pages are taken directly from a thread I created in early 2008 in the My Large Scale dot com--a forum for garden rail train enthusiasts.
I took up the topic of the historic copper mines of Kennecott, Alaska. These operated between 1911 and 1938 and were serviced by the Copper River & Northwestern Railway which ran from Cordova, mile 0 to Kennecott, mile 195 during those years.
In the process of bringing relevant elements of this thread to you, I have rewritten or otherwise updated some of my own responses and deleted others that do not apply here. Included here are some of the comments and questions by other forum members. I started the thread by responding to a question by one of the forum members, "John J." Thus, you will see several references to him as I go about answering his question.
This will be the most comprehensive explanation of these historic mines you are ever likely to come across on the net. The thread was somewhat lengthy, but also packed with information. I will be presenting it over time right here. Please feel free to check back.
