Here is my brief answer (not from the original thread): The mines will never be reopened because: a) the amount of known ore left in place is insufficient to justify the extreme costs involved in starting up a new mining operation at that remote location and b) the entire site except for the Mother Lode properties is now owned by the National Park Service. The Mother Lode properties, while remaining privately held, would be subject to such access restrictions from the adjacent NPS properties that it would not be possible to reactivate those claims under any conceivable circumstances.
